This project is based on spreading the philosophy of Frugal Science -which means the combination of knowledge and experience- by providing affordable and easy to access science tools. Our approach is to promote science through hands-on science workshops, events for public engagement and on-field group researches for students. The goal is to involve all people in society to make an impact on science development. The project is powered by the “Knowledge Space” social venture.
Foldscope is the ultra-affordable, paper microscope Invented by Manu Prakash and Jim Cybulski at Stanford University. Designed to be extremely portable, durable, and to give optical quality similar to conventional research microscopes (magnification of 140X and 2-micron resolution), Foldscope brings hands-on microscopy to new places especially hard to reach people-group globally.
As a company, Foldscope Instruments Inc’s mission is to produce low-cost scientific tools that globally expand access to science.With this project, we aim to A) remove the gap between people and the curiosity and excitement of scientific exploration, B) raise Frugal science awareness, C) engage the community to contribute to existed knowledge and D) create a community habit in science. For example, the urban farming concept where people do small-scale farming in houses and offices.

Mohammed Abbas is a student and social activist in science from Kirkuk, Iraq. In 2015 he graduated from the World Learning Leadership exchange program in USA. He loves travelling and new experiences. His mantra is “Introducing people to opportunities around the world”. Mohammed works at Knowledge Space, a social venture where he developed workshops in many subjects (technology, education and science) and provides services in the Maker Space to young people and students to give back to the community. In addition, he is the initiator of “Foldscope in Iraq”, a project to expose to and engage Iraqi people in science. In the future, he plans to create a national lab for science and make it a reliable place for scientific experiments.
