Hauke Heekeren

Hauke Heekeren is a doctor, neuroscientist, and higher education manager.

He studied medicine at institutions such as Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the University of Münster, completed his doctoral studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, held postdoctoral positions in the United States, and worked as a doctor in the clinic of neurology at Charité in Berlin. He then led the Max Planck research group Neurocognition of Decision-Making and an Emmy Noether research group. Since 2009, he has been a professor of biological psychology and cognitive neuroscience at Freie Universität Berlin, where he also served as dean and vice president of teaching, learning & academic development.

President of University of Hamburg since 2022, Hauke Heekeren shapes and manages the strategic orientation and development of one of the largest universities in Germany. He is committed to establishing University of Hamburg as an international  leader in excellence and innovation and a pioneer of the twin transformation – addressing digitalization and sustainability hand in hand.
