Chisom Soremekun is currently a PhD student at the African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics at Makerere University, Uganda. She was sponsored by the H3Africa Bioinformatics Network to study the genetics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). In 2021, she was awarded the United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship to the University of Leicester, where she worked on the genetic determinants of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) in Ugandans. In 2023, she was awarded the German DAAD Binational PhD Scholarship to evaluate the transferability of the T2D polygenic risk score in Africans. She is currently conducting this project at the Institute of Epidemiology, Helmholtz Zentrum München, Germany.
I want to contribute to the understanding of the genetics of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus in Africa and globally. I want this because it will help to tailor medical interventions based on genetic factors specific to the African population, which can lead to more effective prevention and treatment strategies. I can do this because I have developed strong genomics research capacity at the African Computational Genomics Research Group, and because I work with mentors who are esteemed experts in Genomics and Epidemiology research.
