Dipesh Chakrabarty undergraduate major was in Physics and in business management at the two Institutes of Management that the Government of India had set up. Then, he pursue a PhD in History at the Australian National University following some years spent working. After obtaning his PhD in 1984, he taught at the University of Melbourne where he was the Ashworth Reader in Social Theory and the Director of their Ashworth Centre for Social Theory. Chakrabarty moved to the University of Chicago in 1995. He has held visiting fellowships and positions in many insitutions including Princeton University, Max Planck Institute in Goettingen, University of Calfornia at Berkeley, Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Institute of Human Sciences, Vienna, and Jawaharlal Nehru University in Dellhi. Dipesh Chakrabarty is a founding member of the series “Subaltern Studies”, a co-editor of “Critical Inquiry” and author of numerous other books on Social Class Differences and Postcolonial Studies.
