Cat is the Google lead for Science Foo Camp, an annual event produced with Nature, O’Reilly Media, and Digital Science, and its online alumni community of scientists and science-related people in support of Google’s commitment to fostering scientific and technological innovation. Bringing people together to help them and their communities develop and meet their goals has been her focus, first with the free/open source and maker ecosystems and now with interdisciplinary science.
She has spoken at events and institutions including LinuxConfAU, FOSS Oman, GoOpen Arctic Forum, Carnegie Mellon University, ACM-SIGCSE, National University of Singapore, BINUS University Jakarta, CROSS at University of California, and FOSSASIA, and has used her expertise regarding communities, fundraising and unconference/event organizing to organize conferences including the 1st Open Source Track at Grace Hopper, 2018 and 2020 Sustain! Conferences, and Education & Lifelong Learning Foo with O’Reilly Media, Sesame Workshop & Macmillan Learning. She is a board member of the FreeBSD Foundation, emeritus USENIX.org board member (4 terms), IEEE Standards Association Open Source Committee (OSCom) member, 3x Jury member of Falling Walls Lab and Advisory Board Member of the Portland State University Digital Cities Testbed Center.
