Thomas Elsaesser is director emeritus at Max-Born-Institut für Nichtlineare Optik und Kurzzeitspektroskopie (MBI), and an Emeritus Professor for Experimental Physics at Humboldt University, Berlin. He received his Dr. rer. nat. degree in Physics from Technical University of Munich in 1986, was a postdoctoral fellow at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, and a research associate at the Technical University of Munich. In 1993, he joined MBI as one of the founding directors. He is a member of the Board of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His research focuses on ultrafast phenomena in condensed matter; he received two ERC Advanced Grants and numerous scientific prizes.
