Stephen O’Rahilly is an Irish/British endocrinologist who has led a laboratory at the University of Cambridge since 1991. He has made seminal contributions to the understanding of disordered hormonal secretion and action in a range of diseases including obesity and diabetes. Most recently, he has made critical insights into the endocrine functions of GDF15 including, in collaboration with Dr Marlena Fejzo, clarifying its critical role in the causation of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. He has won numerous international awards for his research and has been elected to the Royal Society and the US National Academy of Sciences. He was knighted in 2013 for his contributions to medical science.
