Dr. Akua Konadu Antwi-Agyakwa holds a PhD in Entomology from the University of Pretoria, and currently serves as a research scientist at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG). Specializing in insect pests of cocoa and cashew, her focus is on Sustainable Pest Management (SPM), inspired by Rachel Carson’s book “The Silent Spring”, which highlighted the harmful effects of synthetic insecticides on non-target organisms. With the support of a TWAS-SG-NAPI grant, Dr. Antwi-Agyakwa’s cocoa research aims to devise bio-based management solutions for mealybugs, vectors of the Cacao Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV). Simultaneously, she endeavors to establish an Integrated Pest Management programme for cashew, incorporating entomopathogens, natural enemies, semiochemicals, and plant extracts, partly sponsored by the GCRF AgriFood Africa Innovation Awards.

I want to identify and develop effective and Sustainable Pest Management tools for farmers. I want this because insect pests are a significant constraint on agricultural productivity. The common solution is to employ synthetic insecticides, which create various health and environmental issues. I can do this because I am passionate about sustainability. I can realise this dream with my acquired knowledge and skills in Entomology and Chemical Ecology.

Akua Antwi-Agyakwa is a part of 2024 Intensive Track
