Prof. Dr. Susanne Buiter is the Scientific Director and Chair of the Board at GFZ. In 2024 and 2025, she will serve as Vice President of the Helmholtz Association for the research field "Earth and Environment." Her key interests include open access to science ("open science"), promoting diversity, and addressing the global societal challenge of climate change.

Susanne Buiter studied geophysics in Utrecht (Netherlands) and received her doctorate with a dissertation on the numerical modeling of surface deformation caused by tectonic processes. Her career has taken her to Switzerland, Canada, and Norway. She led teams in geodynamics and solid Earth geology at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) and conducted research at the University of Oslo. Since 2020, she has been a professor of tectonics and geodynamics at RWTH Aachen University. Susanne is a scientific editor and a strong advocate for the scientific community. She is a member of several national and international committees.
