An oceanographer and ecologist by education, Salvatore has engaged with academia and the UN organizations in charge of oceans, biodiversity and climate for almost 30 years, counting among his achievement the scholarly work underpinning the UN implementing agreement on areas beyond national jurisdiction and the creation of the climate-equivalent of biodiversity – IPBES. As the CEO of the ISC, he strives to mobilize the active scientific community in the formulation of timely transdisciplinary science agenda supporting evidence based policy, and to strengthen the role of the Council in the promotion and defense of free, independent and responsible science.
