Niclas Böhmer is an assistant professor of Algorithmic Decision Making and Society at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), University of Potsdam. His research asks how AI can serve groups whose values conflict. Drawing on the theory of democratic decision-making, he develops the mathematical foundations of algorithms and AI systems that make provably fair, explainable and representative decisions. Before joining HPI, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University, working on AI for social good, and received his PhD in theoretical computer science from TU Berlin.
