Martin Hetzer

Martin Hetzer is President of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, a cross-disciplinary research institution combining basic science with graduate education. Its work spans theoretical and experimental research in Mathematical, Physical, Life, and Information and System Sciences. Hetzer is a champion of curiosity-driven, interdisciplinary science.

Formerly Vice President at the Salk Institute, he returned to Austria in 2023 after two decades in the US. A molecular biologist, he leads ISTA’s pioneering research on ageing, shaping its global impact and inspiring bold exploration.
