He is currently the Director-General Designate of CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory and home to the Large Hadron Collider (and much more). He will take on the role of Director General in January 2026. Between 2018-2024, he was the Executive Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in the UK. STFC funds UK particle physics and astronomy and operates some of the UK’s largest research infrastructure at its two National Laboratories. Prior to this, he was the spokesperson of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment in the US that will fire an intense beam of neutrinos from near Chicago to giant detectors deep underground in South Dakota.
