Maira Jimenez is a PhD candidate in Experimental Medicine at UBC, specializing in metabolomics and microbiome interactions that drive inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the skin-gut axis. She was awarded the CONACYT (Mexican National Council of Science and Technology) PhD award in 2021 to pursue her doctoral studies.
She holds two master’s degrees in Biochemical Sciences and Education Management and has experience as a lecturer for master’s degree students. With a strong industry background, she bridges academia and real-world applications.
Passionate about education and outreach, Maira is co-president of the Experimental Medicine Student Association and an active member of the Mini Med School committee, inspiring high school students to pursue careers in health sciences. She integrates research, education, and industry to drive innovation in biomedical science.
"I want to understand how metabolomics and microbiome interactions can be leveraged to develop innovative health solutions. I want this because translating scientific discoveries into real-world applications will bridge the gap between academia and industry, ultimately improving patient outcomes. I can do this because I have expertise in biotechnology research, industry experience, and a strong commitment to mentorship, education, and cross-cultural collaboration to foster inclusivity and innovation globally."
Maira Jimenez is a part of the Falling Walls Female Science Talents Intensive Track 2025.
