- 2025
Dr. Lucy Macharia is a postdoctoral researcher in the Prince Cancer Group at the University of Cape Town. She obtained her PhD in Anatomical Pathology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she focused on glioblastomas. She holds a master’s degree in Medical Microbiology from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Macharia specializes in cell and molecular sciences with a dedicated focus on cancer research, particularly addressing the research gaps in African cancers. Her current work centers on cervical cancer, where she is working to identify new molecular targets and commercially available drugs that can be used to treat the poorest of women living with this disease. Additionally, she is exploring the use of zebrafish models to assess the effects of these drugs and explore potential cardiovascular events that may be associated with cervical cancer or the drugs.
"My goal is to become a lecturer, and an independent research group leader committed to advancing scientific knowledge, bridging research gaps, and contributing to a global effort to combat cancer, especially within the African context."
Lucy Macharia is a part of the Falling Walls Female Science Talents Intensive Track 2025.
