James Spall

James is Co-founder and CTO at Lumai, an Oxford University spinout using 3D optics to create a next-generation processor for AI acceleration with orders of magnitude better energy efficiency. Their technology not only enables, but vastly accelerates a whole range of AI-driven applications at scale, and is based on many years of ground-breaking research. At Lumai, he is working alongside a fantastic team combining commercial and start-up experience, industry know-how and technical expertise.

In 2025, James pitched Lumai at the Falling Walls Venture competition and won the Science Breakthrough of Year 2026 in the Science Start-ups category.
