Israel Smart is a social innovator, climate advocate, and agri-tech entrepreneur working at the intersection of science and communities. As founder of Smartel Agri-Tech, he leads a farmer-driven initiative that empowers smallholder farmers as co-creators of climate-resilient solutions through hydroponics, circular systems, and participatory research. Recognized by the World Food Programme, COP29, UN SDG Action Awards, and UN Scroll of Honor, he champions accessible and inclusive innovation.

Smartel is a farmer-led science engagement initiative in Rwanda and Nigeria that co-creates climate-resilient food systems through smart hydroponics and circular economy practices. By transforming farmers into co-researchers, it combines scientific knowledge with local expertise to develop sustainable solutions. The project reduces water use, repurposes plastic waste, improves food security, and has trained over 5,000 farmers while deploying 500+ hydroponic systems for climate adaptation.
