Ferdinand Schmidt-Kaler obtained his doctorate and completed postdoctoral research in Physics at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching with T. Hänsch (1989–1992), followed by postdoctoral work at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris with S. Haroche (1992–1995). From 1995 to 2005, he served as an Assistant at the University of Innsbruck with R. Blatt. He was a Full Professor at the University of Ulm (2005–2010) before joining the QUANTUM, Institute of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2010, where he is also a member of the Helmholtz Institute Mainz. Since 2022, he has been co-founder and scientific advisor of the quantum computing start-up neQxt.
