Donald Bruce Dingwell

Donald B. Dingwell is President of Academia Europaea (since 2025) and a geoscientist specialising in geochemistry, mineralogy, petrology, and volcanic processes. He is also Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology and Director of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich).

He studied geology and geophysics in Canada, earning his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, and held research and academic positions at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, the University of Toronto, and the University of Bayreuth before joining LMU Munich in 2000. He previously served as Secretary-General of the European Research Council (2011–2013) and has held senior leadership roles in major scientific organisations, including the European Geosciences Union and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior.
