Christoph Markschies

Christoph Markschies studied Protestant theology, classical philology and philosophy and was a professor of ancient Christianity at the universities of Jena and Heidelberg. Since 2004, he has been working at Humboldt University in Berlin, where he was president from 2006 to 2010. He has been president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2020. His academic field of work is the history of ancient Christianity in the context of ancient religions and cultures.He has received many honorary doctorates and prizes, including the Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation (DFG).
