Born in 1963 in Potsdam, Brandenburg, he studied journalism, politics, economics, and political administration at Ludwig Maximilian University and the German School of Journalism in Munich from 1986 to 1991. He earned a doctorate in political science in 1992/1993. From 1999 to 2004, he served as a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament, working on committees focused on economics, European affairs, and regional development. He also held leadership roles in CDU business and state organizations and worked as managing director of biotechnology companies in Hennigsdorf.
Since 2004, he has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). He serves as coordinator of the Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy (ITRE) and as chair of the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA). In addition, he has held senior positions within the CDU, including deputy chairman roles at both the federal Mittelstands- und Wirtschaftsunion and the CDU Brandenburg, and has been a member of the CDU Brandenburg state board since 2003.
