Carsten Marr is Founding Director of the Institute of AI for Health at Helmholtz Munich. He develops AI-based methods to improve disease diagnosis, treatment, and understanding. After studying theoretical physics, he transitioned to theoretical biology. He founded his research group at Helmholtz Munich in 2013 and was among the first to apply deep learning to biomedical data. His work includes predicting stem cell development from microscopy images and detecting leukaemias in blood samples. He has received several awards, including an ERC Consolidator Grant.
