Robert Kaczmarczyk: Breaking the Wall to Democratised AI

Falling Walls Foundation | Christoph Schuhmann, Richard Vencu, Romain Beaumont, Robert Kaczmarczyk & Jenia Jitsev

How Open-source Movements Shape the Future of Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence continues to advance at a rapid pace, questions about its creators, owners, and accessibility have become paramount in our collective consciousness. The rapid transformation of our world by AI technology raises concerns about companies prioritising profit over ethical considerations. This focus on profit could lead to the privatisation of artificial intelligence, creating a monopoly that has the potential to impede societal progress. LAION, a nonprofit research entity and grassroots initiative, facilitates collaborative efforts among academic researchers, private enterprises, citizen scientists, and tech enthusiasts, striving to democratise large-scale AI research.

At Falling Walls, Robert Kaczmarczyk from LAION e.V. will delve into the envisioned future of democratising AI, discussing the necessary steps that pave the way to this transformative reality

LIVE EVENT; AVAILABLE VIA LIVESTREAM FREE OF CHARGE FOR LOGGED IN USERS AND ATTENDANCE IN LECTURE HALL. RADIAL, GROUND FL. FOR SUMMIT PARTICIPANTS

LAION originates from a vision to democratize machine learning research by promoting open collaboration and providing universal access to datasets, code, and models. Christoph Schumann, Dr. Jenia Jitsev, Richard Vencu, Dr. Romain Beaumont, Dr. Mehdi Cherti, Jan Ebert, and Dr. Robert Kaczmarczyk, researchers and citizen scientists with various backgrounds, are the founding members of LAION. The community is an embodiment of the shared commitment to make AI research more open and democratic. This vision has been realized through significant collaborations with diverse entities, including Juelich Supercomputing Center, Huggingface, the University of Washington, Stability AI, and others. Moreover, LAION’s use of the world’s most powerful supercomputers such as JUWELS Booster, Summit, and Frontier, attests to their drive to harness AI for societal advancement. As of today, LAION is an open dynamic community of more than 25,000 machine learning enthusiasts.
