Jorn Achterberg was born in Berlin and studied Anglistics and Slavistics at Universities in Erlangen-Nuremberg and Glasgow (UK). He did his PhD in Slavonic Philology with a focus on sociolinguistics. He worked at Erlangen-Nuremberg and St. Petersburg State Universities. In 2006 he joined the Division of International Affairs of the DFG with the responsibility for Eastern Europe. In 2008 he became Head of Brussels Office of KoWi, the EU liaison office of the German research organizations. From 2009 to 2016 he was Head of the DFG Office in Moscow and now is Director for Europe and Central Asia.
