Helmut studied chemistry at the University of Cologne and obtained his PhD in Physical Chemistry. After several positions within BASF he became Divisional Technology Officer for Dispersions & Pigments in Shanghai. Helmut took over responsibilities for the Digitalization, Automation & Innovation Management department within BASF’s research division Group Research in 2022. Since July 2023, Helmut has headed Group Research with 3,600 employees. The division combines expertise in the fields of chemical synthesis, process development, biotechnology, catalysis, high-throughput experimentation, analytics, and digitalization, and will drive forward projects that address the major sustainability issues such as CO2 reduction in chemical processes and products, energy efficiency or recycling technologies.
