Ernst Rietschel is the European Affairs Representative of acatech. He received his doctorate in 1971 and worked until 1979 at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg, leading a research group. Since the 1980s he has had leading roles at research institutions like the Center for Medicine and Biosciences Borstel, the European Medical Research Council of the European Science Foundation, and the Leibniz Association, where he was president until 2010. From 2013 to 2015 he was Chairman and Founding Director of the Berlin Institute of Health. Presently he is a member of various institutional supervisory boards and international evaluation committees and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Falling Walls Foundation.
