Violeta Vázquez-Rojas Maldonado is a linguist, researcher, and public official with an outstanding academic trajectory. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH), a master’s degree in Hispanic Linguistics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from New York University. She has been a professor and researcher at the Center for Linguistic and Literary Studies of El Colegio de México, where she conducted research on descriptive semantics, noun-phrase syntax, and documentation of Indigenous languages—particularly Purépecha. Her academic work has focused on highlighting Mexico’s linguistic richness and contributing to the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages from a scientific and critical perspective.
Since January 2025, she has served as Undersecretary for Science and Humanities at the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (SECIHTI) and also coordinates the Justice Plan for the Purépecha People—an interinstitutional initiative of national scope. In her role, she promotes an agenda centered on strengthening public research, fostering the link between science and society, and integrating community and intercultural knowledge into science policy. In 2024, she coordinated the axis on Social Rights, Well-Being, and Inequality Reduction in the Dialogues for Transformation. Her institutional trajectory is marked by a humanistic approach to science policy and a strong commitment to promoting science in service of the public interest and cultural diversity.
