Jörg Vogel is a German biochemist and microbiologist specializing in RNA biology and infection research. He is the founding and current director of the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) in Würzburg and also serves as professor and director of the Institute for Molecular Infection Biology (IMIB) at the University of Würzburg.
His scientific work focuses on RNA-mediated regulation in bacterial pathogens and host–pathogen interactions, with a strong emphasis on high-throughput sequencing technologies and single-cell approaches to study infection processes. He is widely regarded as a pioneer in applying RNA-centric methods to microbiology and infection biology.
Vogel studied biochemistry at Humboldt University of Berlin and Imperial College London, completed his PhD in 1999, and conducted postdoctoral research at Uppsala University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem before establishing an independent research group at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin. He has been a professor in Würzburg since 2009 and has led HIRI since its establishment in 2017.
