Eduardo Reck Miranda is a computer scientist and composer internationally recognised for his research on AI and music, and on brain–computer interfacing. He is Professor of Computer Music at the University of Plymouth, UK, and is widely regarded as a pioneer of quantum computer music, a field he introduced to explore applications of quantum computing to music composition. His symphonic works have been performed by ensembles including the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta.
Which wall does your research or project break?
Computing technology is ubiquitous in music, from composition and performance to recording and distribution. Quantum computers are a new generation of computing technology that promises to transform many fields, including music. However, the music community remains largely unaware of their potential because the technology is still in its infancy and largely confined to research laboratories. My research investigates the impact of quantum computing on musical creativity.
What is the main goal of your research or project?
Quantum computers have the potential to transform the music industry, but this technology is being developed primarily from a scientific perspective. While musicians are largely unaware of quantum computing, scientists developing the technology are not necessarily familiar with the needs of musicians. My research develops algorithms, demonstrations, and compositions aimed at bridging this gap.
What impact does your research or project have on society?
Sophisticated technologies are often developed with limited input from wider society. The rise of AI is a case in point. Rather than supporting musical creativity, AI is threatening the future of musicians. My research places musicians at the heart of the debate about the development of quantum computing technologies for music, engaging with this emerging field while it is still being shaped.
What advice would you give to artists at the start of their careers who are interested in working at the intersection of art and science?
Do not be afraid to ask questions. Do not assume that scientists are not interested in art; many are, but they may simply be focused on their research and unaware of the possibilities for collaboration. Knock on the doors of research labs, start conversations, and explore the possibilities together.
