Volker Stollorz is a science journalist by passion, has been reporting on the friction zones between science and society since 1991 and is founding chief editor and managing director of the Science Media Center Germany (SMC) since its inception in 2015. The mission of the editorial team of the SMC is to provide fast, reliable and independent scientific expertise and facts tailor-made for journalism. In the SMC lab a team of public interest technologists explore new and unusual paths like AI and data-driven methods for augmenting science journalism to survive the information overload confronting the profession.
After studying biology and philosophy at the University of Cologne and at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, the biology graduate experienced the founding of three science desks first-hand as a science journalist (DIE ZEIT, Die Woche, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung). He has been an innovater in science journalism for a long time, is a long-standing member of the German Science Journalists’ Association (WPK) and the Netzwerk Recherche and received numerous awards for his reporting for print, online, and broadcast media.
