Roland Wohlgemuth is a chemist and biotechnologist whose work spans academia and industry at the interface of chemistry, biology, and engineering. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Basel and conducted postdoctoral research on artificial photosynthesis with Nobel Laureate Melvin Calvin at the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
Wohlgemuth spent over three decades in industry, building and leading biochemistry and biotechnology programs at Fluka and later Sigma-Aldrich. Since 2017, he has been a Professor at Lodz University of Technology, advancing research and education in biobased materials and biotechnology.
He is cofounder of the Swiss Industrial Biocatalysis Consortium, Chairman of the European Society of Applied Biocatalysis, and President of the Swiss Coordination Committee Biotechnology (SKB) since 2009. His research focuses on biocatalysis, industrial biotechnology, and the bioeconomy, with applications across medicine, sustainability, and advanced bioanalytical technologies.
