Dr. Marina Gertsvolf leads the Frequency and Time (F&T) group at the National Research Council Canada, where her team is responsible for realizing the second—the SI unit of time—and maintaining Canada’s official time, UTC(NRC). She earned her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Ottawa in 2009 and has since led research and development in atomic clocks, frequency combs, timescale generation, and calibration methods at NRC.

Dr. Gertsvolf actively contributes to international time and frequency standardization bodies, including the Consultative Committee on Time and Frequency (CCTF), Sistema Interamericano de Metrologia (SIM), URSI, and the ITU. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa and is a Fellow of the NRC–uOttawa JCEP collaboration centre. In 2021, she received the NRC Outstanding Achievement Award for Research and Technology Breakthrough.
