Francesco Gianoli is a professor and principal investigator at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where he holds an ERC Starting Grant. A physicist working in sensory neuroscience, he studies how the ear detects and amplifies sound, and why that machinery fails in hearing loss. He developed the first preparation to keep a living cochlea functioning outside the body, making it directly accessible to measurement, and leveraged it to show that the mammalian ear amplifies sound by the same physical principle that governs hearing in insects and amphibians.
