Yasemin Karakaşoğlu

Prof. Dr. Yasemin Karakaşoğlu is a full professor at the University of Bremen, Germany and head of the Unit for Intercultural Education. She studied Turcology, German Philology and Political Sciences at the Universities of Hamburg and Ankara and worked as researcher at the Center for Studies on Turkey in Essen (1991-1995) and at the University of Essen (University of Essen 1996-2004). Her PhD in Educational Science was awarded the highly recognised Augsburger Wissenschaftspreis in 2000.

Her research and teaching areas are: Teacher Training, Schools and Higher Education Institutions in a Migration Society; Transnational, Intercultural and Critical Race Theory; Islam in German Schools, The Headscarf Discussion in Germany.

Besides research and teaching Yasemin Karakaşoğlu is involved in university and non-university advisory boards and committees on migration, diversity and equality of opportunities. Among others she was a member of the University Management as Vice President for International and Diversity (from 2011 till 2017). She was a founding member of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (2009 – 2015). Currently, she is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Freudenberg Foundation, the Islamkolleg Deutschland and the Zeitschrift für erziehungswissenschaftliche Migrationsforschung (Journal of Educational Migration Research) and chairwoman of the „Rat für Migration“ (Council for Migration e.V.). Since 2016 she is elected Board member of the DAAD.
