Wim Leemans joined DESY in February 2019 from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in California. The well-known plasma accelerator pioneer was Director of the Research Division for Accelerator Technologies and Applied Physics and Head of the BELLA Center (Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator Center). He has received numerous awards and prizes including the E.O. Lawrence Award in 2009 from the Department of Energy for his pioneering work in the development of laser plasma wakefield accelerators. Since 2020 Wim Leemans is professor at the University of Hamburg.
