Richard Morris is a practicising neuroscientist whose research interests focus on the neurobiology of spatial and episodic memory. He runs a laboratory at the University of Edinburgh that has developed some of the tools widely used by behavioural neuroscientists to study the underlying mechanisms. After his BA in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, he received a Dr Phil at Sussex University. After postdoc and other positions, including a period working for BBC Television, he held a Lectureship at the University of St Andrews before moving to Edinburgh in 1986. He was appointed Professor of Neuroscience in 1993, was instrumental in building up the Edinburgh Neuroscience community, and is currently Director of the Centre for Cognitive and Neural Systems. He also holds an Adjunct Chair of Neuroscience at the Centre for the Biology of Memory in Trondheim (Norway) and is presently seconded as Head of Neuroscience and Mental Health at the Wellcome Trust.
He has published over 150 papers in major peer-review journals, has served on various Scientific Advisory Boards (including the journal SCIENCE) and latterly as President of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (2006-2008). He was elected to Fellowship of the Royal Society of London in 1997 and to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2006.
