Rebecca Cassidy

2011 Speaker 2011 Speaker Breakthrough Day

The Anthropologist Rebecca Cassidy is ERC Starting Grant Holder and Professor of Anthropology at Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths University of London. She is studying gambling from an anthropological point of view (rather than from a psychological/pathological point of view only), through four case studies in the UK, China, Cyprus and the Slovenian/Italy border, also touching on cross-border and online gambling. She previously studied the world of gambling and horse racing in the UK. Gambling in Europe seems to be worth an estimated E89billion and is a rapidly expanding and changing industry (maybe also more mainstream than before). It is also a source of concern to legislators and consumers. Her work could propose a new perspective to policy makers in this field, gambling legislation is not harmonised at the European level.
