Piet O. Schmidt is an experimental physicist heading the QUEST Institute for Experimental Quantum Metrology, a joint institute of Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig and Leibniz University Hannover. His research is devoted to developing and employing quantum algorithms to perform high precision spectroscopy of trapped ions for applications in optical clocks and fundamental physics. He studied physics in Konstanz and Portland (Oregon) and did his PhD at the University of Stuttgart. After a PostDoc at NIST in Boulder, he became a junior group leader at the University of Innsbruck with a START award of the Austrian government. In 2009 he attained his present position. Currently, he is the speaker of the collaborative research centre 1227 “DQ-mat” and co-speaker of the Cluster of Excellence 2123 “QuantumFrontiers” and the “Quantum Valley Lower Saxony” Q1 project. Since 2018 he is a member of the BMBF programme committee on quantum technologies and was a member of the expert council on quantum computing of the federal government in Germany in 2020.
