Jury: Social Sciences and the Humanities

Peter Strohschneider is Professor for German Medieval Studies at the University of Munich. He studied German Philology, Law, History, Sociology and Political Sciences in Munich, obtained his Doctorate in 1984 and his Habilitation in 1991. From 1992 to 2002 he was Chair of German Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Dresden University of Technology before he took over the same position at University of Munich. From 2006 to 2011 he served as Chairman of the Wissenschaftsrat and from 2013 to 2019 as President of the German Research Foundation.

He has worked in the fields of science administration and policy and published on the science system. His literary research focuses on cultural medieval studies, theories of pre-modern texts as well as fiction and poetry in medieval and early modern times. He declined the Chair of German Medieval Studies at Free University of Berlin and University of Tübingen. He has held visiting professorships at Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris), Freiburg and Frankfurt am Main and was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit (first class) in 2010. Peter Strohschneider is member of numerous national and international organisations, including Leopoldina – German National Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea.
