With the goal of bringing science, technology, and innovation (STI) to the daily life of local and regional communities, the Open Science Hub Portugal (OSHub Portugal) promotes school performance, while boosting entrepreneurship and social innovation in the region through collaborations with schools, local community, civil society, companies, NGO’s, research institutes and universities.

ACTIVITIES

Promotion of STI literacy through participatory projects and community engagement. Open schooling initiatives that position the school as a hub for collaboration with local stakeholders in tackling local challenges. Co-creation of social innovation projects contributing to regional development.

IMPACT

In 1 year of the project (07.07.18) OSHub Portugal reached out to 3000 participants (part.), both national and international, through: exhibitions – 900 part.; science workshops for students – 1100 part.; activities for the general public – 650 part.; citizen science projects – 150 part.; student-led initiatives – 50 part.; national school interchange events – 80 part.; support on school-driven science initiatives – 230 part.; participatory laboratories – 60 part.; 1 innovation project under development (with intermunicipal impact); 1 digital application developed; project residencies with researchers and innovators – 30 part.; conferences for specialists – 70 part. All of this was accomplished due to 17 collaborations with national and international entities.

TARGET GROUP

Local and regional community, namely students, promoting their engagement on science, technology and innovation through co-creation of projects focused on local challenges, in collaboration with stakeholders.

KEY LEARNINGS

  • In order to engage citizens in science, you need to find what’s relevant to them
  • One can learn about science and work on local problems at the same time
  • Listening to the ideas of stakeholders and use that information as a benefit for school/community projects’ co-creation
