Crowd-Science for the Med Sea

Italy (Palermo)

Crowd-Science for the Med Sea is about finding out how crowdfunding can be a tool for small-scale marine science for young researchers and ocean literacy engagement.

Crowd-Science aims to break walls…

  • Between science and society by involving the crowd of backers to choose and enable science projects through financial micro contributions;
  • Of a competitive system for science funding through crowdfunding;
  • Between theory and practice by empowering young researchers to gain experiences and lead their own expedition. The impact this first pilot had on the participants range from science communication capacity building, empowered research reputation for young researchers and first hand exchange with scientists and non-scientists through action.

The crowdfunding campaign enables interaction between scientists and their research projects with the public. The project also fosters the exchange between scientists with different research focus and non-scientists through action research on board. Ultimately, engagement with the broader public and crowd of backers has been generated through social media posts, pictures, videos of behind the scenes, processes and results.
