Ever since he became embroiled at the age of 17 in a controversial proposal regarding the environmental and economic future of a California watershed, David Hart has been searching for ways to increase the value of science in society. For the last 15 years, he and his colleagues have been growing the capacity of universities to help solve complex problems, which led to the creation of the Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions. To date, more than a thousand faculty and students spanning nearly 20 universities have engaged in collaborations that align research with societal needs.
