Daniël Vanmaekelbergh is University Professor and Chair in Chemistry and Physics of Nanostructures, Departement of Condensed Matter and Interfaces, Debye Institute for NanoMaterials Science at Utrecht University. Transcending the boundaries between chemists and physicists, this multidisciplinary academic also acknowledged by the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research, has developed a new way of understanding Atoms and Molecules. Promising to discern completely new classes of materials based on interacting colloidal building blocks, important for solar cells, lasers and leads, Daniël Vanmaekelbergh’s work embarks on pioneering research in nanoscience that relates the atomic landscape to the local electronic spectrum.
