2020 Science Start-ups (Falling Walls Venture)

CoreTissue BioEngineering Inc is a start-up company spun out from Waseda University in 2016. The company is focused on commercialization of artificial ligament made from decellularized animal tissue for use in reconstruction surgery for treatment of the anterior cruciate ligament injuries. Our solution has significant advantages over preferred treatment options like autografts and other options. We are currently performing pre-clinical large animal studies with IDE filing expected in 2022. The team is led by Yoji Jokura, over 15 years’ experience in medical device product development and Professor Kiyotaka Iwasaki who originally developed the decellularization technology, currently Professor at Waseda University and formerly Research Scientist at Laboratory for Tissue Engineering, Harvard Medical School. From our inception in 2016, we have been supported by WERU Investment, Japan’s oldest university affiliated venture capital firm affiliated with Waseda University.
