Alga Life
Presented by Shaima Alqassab Nominated by Science and Innovation Park Alga Life has developed an eco-friendly and biodegradable ink made from algae and natural ingredients. Today's ink is made from soy bean or vegetable oil mixed with petroleum ingredients. The process of producing soy bean or vegetable oil is not convenient as it uses large amounts of resources, e.g. fuel, machines, or harmful fertilisers. That contributes to global warming. Overall, ink is much more expensive than car fuel.
By using algae, a natural resource that grows anywhere, to make an eco-friendly ink that is sustainable, renewable, biodegradable and low cost, Alga Life aims at reinventing the ink industry. Targeting public administrations and environmentally conscious customers, they plan on starting to enter the market in the United Arab Emirates and expand from there. Founded by four young Emirati women, Alga Life is part of the incubation programme of the Science and Innovation Park. They also want to inspire the Emirate youth to start their own start-ups to create an economy that is oil independent in the long run.
