Alison Abbott has a PhD in pharmacology.  After a short period as a researcher at the University of Leeds, she became editor of Trends in Pharmacological Sciences. In 1992 she moved to Munich as Senior European Correspondent for Nature, with responsibility for writing news, features, editorials and books and arts reviews. Since 2019 she has been working as a freelance journalist, writing mostly for Nature, but also for other outlets. Her main subject area is biology, particularly neuroscience, but she also writes about cultural issues related to science and its history. Writing prizes include the Euroscience Science Writers Award (2019) and the ABSW Science Journalist of the Year Award, category Features (2018).
