Marja Makarow, Jury Chair 2020-2022, Life Sciences

Marja Makarow is President of Academia Europaea – The European Academy and Professor Emerita of Applied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Helsinki. She is former Director of Biocenter Finland, Vice-President of the Finnish Research Council – Academy of Finland, Chief Executive of the European Science Foundation ESF and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of the University of Helsinki. She is member of the Board of the European Innovation Council, and former member of the Governing Board of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology EIT and Panel Chair of the ERC Starting Grants programme. She chaired until recently Technology Academy Finland awarding the global million euro Millennium Technology Prize for ground-breaking innovations. She advised the EC in the European Research Area Board and the Finnish Government in the Prime Minister’s Research and Innovation Council. She has evaluated research and innovation outputs from individual and institutional levels to national systems levels. She is Commander of the Order of the White Lion Finland and Chevalier de l’Ordre de Legion d’Honneur France.
