JoAnne Hewett is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook University. Her research focuses on particle physics and astrophysics, with a particular emphasis on fundamental questions in high-energy physics.
Until 2025, she served as Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and President of Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), the partnership managing the laboratory on behalf of the DOE’s Office of Science. Prior to that, she was Associate Laboratory Director for Fundamental Physics and Chief Research Officer at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where she also held a professorship at Stanford University.
Throughout her career, Hewett has played a leading role in advancing large-scale research infrastructures and interdisciplinary collaboration across fundamental physics, quantum science, and emerging technologies.
