A physicist by training Günter Nooke is a former East German civil rights activist and German politician. He was German Chancellor Angela Merkel's personal envoy to Africa from 2010 up until 2021 and Advisor on Africa of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) from 2014 to 2021. Prior to that, he was the German Government's Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid. Nooke was a member of the German Bundestag from 1998 to 2005.
