Reducing both the carbon footprint and waste generation in the healthcare sector are examples of methods to achieve environmental sustainability – this escalating issue requires attention and action.
This Round Table talk will highlight the devastating trajectory that global healthcare is on, based on its carbon footprint and waste generation while demanding the implementation of sustainable solutions as a global priority.

Sustainability Meets Healthcare
Peta Ashworth, Michael Schuetz, Volker Richter, Arun Majumdar
Professor Peta Ashworth OAM is the Director of the Andrew N. Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership, and Chair in Sustainable Energy Futures at The University of Queensland (UQ). Prior to joining UQ in 2016, Peta worked as a consultant to industry, as Research Group Leader at CSIRO, and in senior executive roles for the Body Shop.
Professor Ashworth is a globally-recognised expert in the fields of energy, communication, stakeholder engagement, and technology assessment. For almost two decades, Peta has been researching public attitudes toward climate and energy technologies, including wind, carbon capture and storage (CCS), solar photovoltaics, storage, nuclear, geothermal and more recently hydrogen.
The Palaszczuk Government recently appointed Peta to chair a seven-member expert taskforce charged with fast tracking the establishment of a sustainable hydrogen supply chain in Queensland.
Professor Michael Schuetz is the Director of the Jamieson Trauma Institute and Chair of Trauma at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane / Australia. He remains a practicing orthopaedic surgeon and international research leader in the field of orthopaedic trauma research and trauma systems. His research is focusing strongly on translational aspects. Michael chairs the AO TechTransfer Board / Zuerich and the Research Committee of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He is Member of the Evaluation Subcommittee advising the Australian Department of Health on new technologies requesting public funding. Michael was the inaugural Director of the State-wide Trauma Network in Queensland and is now the inaugural Chair of the Queensland Trauma and Burns Quality Assurance Committee.
Volker Richter is Head of Quality at Plant Regensburg responsible for the running production. He is also responsible to integrate the production of their Dutch partner, VDL Nedcar, into the BMW production system.
Richter previously held the position of Vice President for Quality Management BMW Group and VP for Managing Total Vehicle Architecture and Integration within the BMW Research and Innovation Center (FIZ). He has broad experience across a wide range of divisions in BMW both in Germany and the US, with responsibility for areas such as Strategy and Steering Pre Development, Advanced Engineering, Technical Projects, Product Engineering Interior Components and Body and White and Total Vehicle Quality.
Volker holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Aachen and has subsequently also undertaken automotive focused research at the University of Stuttgart and Harvard Business School in Boston.
Dr. Arun Majumdar is the Jay Precourt Provostial Chair Professor at Stanford University, Dean of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Senior Fellow and former Director of the Precourt Institute for Energy. He served in the Obama administration as the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) and Acting Under Secretary of Energy. He served as a Science Envoy for the US Department of State and currently serves as the Chair of the US Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. Dr. Majumdar was also the Vice President for Energy at Google and advises numerous business in the energy innovation ecosystem. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1985 and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989.
